Vitamins
Vitamins are extremely complex organic substances that consist of one vital part and one amino group, thereby the name. They are essential to the human beings’ nutrition and many of them cannot be made by the body but have to be taken via food. Therefore they are found in a numerous amount in food, but are easily destroyed by air, oxidation, heat, light, drugs, and aging.
Vitamins do not contain calories, which means no energy. Instead many of them are important constituents in enzymes and are consequently important to the metabolism.
Some vitamins need liquid in order to be absorbed of the body and other need fat. According to this, they are divided into water soluble (B and C), respectively fat soluble (A, D, E, and K).
Vitamins co-operate with one another and also with minerals, enzymes and hormones. Lack or excess of one only of these could put the whole body in imbalance and it is extremely important to eat versatilely and to choose nutritious food. We need consequently all vitamins, preferably every day.
Deficiency can also occur if your body for some reason is not able to take up the nutrition, e.g. on the occasion of allergies or lack of fatty acid
Maybe you wonder why vitamin F – J do not exist? They did in the beginning, but later on it was concluded that some of them were not vitamins, e. g. B4, B8 and vitamin J. Others was given new names when it was discovered they belonged to vitamin B, like vitamin G, H, M and P.
